A Castle Rock mom will celebrate her first Mother’s Day with not one, but two baby girls brought to her in very different ways.
Anita and Blake always knew they wanted children but also knew they were going to have to find an alternative way to create their family. They never expected a friend was going to be the answer.
The couple; married seven years; said all in the last year, their dreams have come true. Kaitlyn was adopted nine months ago, and Jillian was born via surrogate in April thanks to their friends, Shelby and Jeff.
“It`s every dream come true,” Anita said. “As a little girl I remember people saying, what do you want to be when you grow up? Well, I wanted to be a mom. I wanted to be a mom.”
Those dreams were smashed when Anita was just 21 years old. Her doctor told her it was unlikely she’d be able to have children, so she and Blake found another way; through Shelby.
“To me a child is a gift, and to be able to give that to somebody was something I wanted to do,” Shelby said.
But it certainly hasn’t been an easy road. Aside from the financial strain and pressure, Blake and Anita encountered a little resistance to their blended family. “Obviously I say miracle, but at the same time, it is science that`s helped us achieve this goal,” Anita said. “Surrogacy is not approved by the Catholic Church. We have faced some opposition in some ways.”
But, with friends at their side, this family of four is looking to the future and chuckling about the perils of raising two baby girls. They said they hope they can repay Shelby for carrying the best gift they ever received. But Shelby and Jeff said their thanks is found in friendship. “Just seeing Blake and Anita’s face,” Shelby said, “it was well worth it.”
Anita said someday when the time comes both little Kaitlyn and Jillian will know just how special they really are. “Different women gave us amazing gifts and help us become parents and I think that`s exactly how I`ll explain it to them.”
The Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine said they’re seeing an increase in the number of couples seeking a gestational carrier; or surrogate. It’s costly however, between the fertility clinic, compensation for the surrogate and lawyer fees, it can run between $80,000-$100,000.
